Purpose of the Standards Framework

The CREXOM Professional Competency & Standards Framework establishes a consistent and defensible foundation for evaluating applied competency in commercial real estate execution, operations, and management.

Specifically, the framework:

  • Defines what CREXOM™ certification represents
  • Establishes the competency domains assessed by the program
  • Sets proficiency expectations used for evaluation
  • Supports consistent credential issuance and maintenance

The framework serves as the primary governing reference for CREXOM™ credential integrity and oversight.

Scope of the Credential

CREXOM™ validates applied operational competency across core commercial real estate functions.

The certification is designed to assess readiness to:

  • Operate, manage, and support commercial real estate assets
  • Understand execution-level responsibilities across property types
  • Apply operational, financial, and risk-based decision-making principles

Scope Limitations

CREXOM™ does not:

  • Confer licensure or regulatory authority
  • Certify legal, appraisal, brokerage, or fiduciary capacity
  • Replace state licensing requirements or professional legal advice

The credential is designed to operate alongside formal education, licensure, and professional experience by validating applied execution-level competency in commercial real estate operations and management.

The Real Estate Training & Management Institute (RETMI™) serves as the governing authority for the CREXOM™ Professional Competency & Standards Framework.

RETMI™ is responsible for:

Core Competency Domains

The CREXOM™ Professional Competency & Standards Framework is organized around ten core competency domains representing the foundational areas of commercial real estate execution and operations.

These domains collectively define the knowledge and applied understanding required for certification.

The ten core competency domains include:

  1. Commercial Real Estate Foundations & Asset Classes
  2. Commercial Property Operations
  3. Building Systems & Asset Readiness
  4. Leasing Structures & Tenant Management
  5. Broker Interaction & Negotiation Awareness
  6. Commercial Real Estate Financial, Accounting & Economic Fundamentals
  7. Expense Recovery, CAM & Lease Administration
  8. Risk Management, Insurance & Compliance
  9. Construction, Capital Projects & Maintenance Planning
  10. Professional Execution & Operational Judgment

Each domain is defined by performance-oriented competency expectations aligned to real-world operational responsibilities.

Proficiency Levels

The Professional Competency & Standards Framework defines graduated proficiency levels to reflect increasing depth of understanding and application.

These levels are used to:

  • Structure assessment expectations
  • Differentiate foundational knowledge from applied competency
  • Support consistent evaluation across candidates

Proficiency levels are defined and administered by RETMI™ in accordance with published standards and applied consistently across all CREXOM™ assessments.

Assessment Alignment

CREXOM™ assessments are governed by the Professional Competency & Standards Framework to ensure:

  • Alignment between competency expectations and evaluation
  • Consistency across modules and cumulative assessment
  • Preservation of credential integrity

Specific assessment mechanics, thresholds, and evaluation logic are governed by RETMI™ and are not publicly disclosed.

Candidate Policies & Program Rules

CREXOM™ candidates are governed by a formal CREXOM™ Candidate Handbook that defines eligibility requirements, program participation standards, assessment policies, recertification obligations, professional conduct expectations, and administrative procedures.

The CREXOM™ Candidate Handbook is issued to candidates at the time of enrollment through the CREXOM™ learning platform and applies for the duration of candidacy and credential holding.
